"Trains Banner Armies made of two types of military units. Villages replace Houses, bring Villagers on aging-up, the training of defensive units and receiving Shipments. Best at: Defending and Booming." ― In-game description.

Overview

The Chinese are one of the three Asian civilizations originally added to Age of Empires III with The Asian Dynasties expansion, and are based on the Great Qing Empire (大清帝國). In the base game the Chinese are modeled on the reign of Kangxi (1661-1722px), while in Wars of Liberty they are modernized to the late Qing dynasty period and their leader is Empress Dowager Cixi, who reigned from 1861 to 1908.

Now it rests upon the player who will take rein on their part of the battle for the Chinese civilization. Will the player bring the Great Qing to glory again or will the player cause the Great Qing to succumb foreign powers? Its a battle for the civilization's liberty.

History

In Wars of Liberty, 19th Century China, the Qing Empire, is moving toward its watershed moment since the reign of Kangxi. Since then, the Chinese population has grown quite significantly, in correlation with better civil bureaucracy. Although the current leader Cixi proves to be a powerful figure, her government's military is deemed relatively incompetent. Many attempts to modernize the Qing Army proves to be futile. As a result, the Qing Army is based on Quantity over Quality. So, with the difficulty of directing a huge, relatively backwards, military, Qing has exposed itself to foreign interference and foreign invasion. In the examples of the Opium wars and the Boxer's rebellion.
